The back panel has slots where one can run wires out to various components outside of the rack i.e. the TV. The unit also has space internally between the back wall and the back edge of each shelf so that one can run connections from one device/shelf to another. Also I do believe the back panel can be removed but I have not needed to do this. Overall I am very glad I purchased this piece. It is not what I would refer to as fine furniture but it very very nice. My girlfriend thought I was just buying more toys and gave me a bit of a look, but she had to admit it was good looking and very practical. I'd buy it all over again. Don
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. There are two panels that are removable, approximately 12 x 16“. The top section, where the lift up the cover is, is not removable. I wound up putting the seven channel amplifier up there, so I drilled 3 2 inch holes across the back for venting and it works well. Be aware that the bottom few inches of the rack are solid, so you won’t have quite as much available space as you might think Based on the dimensions alone.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. There are two panels and both are held on by fairly strong magnets. Good access and secure panels.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes, it is two magnetized panels that easily come off. I have decided to not even have one of mine on for air flow purposes.
