Can I use half of the 600 set? null

Yes. It comes with 2 strands of 300 led lights. Each with it's own plug for the wall outlet.

Yes. From the main switch there are 2 strings of lights but they are hard wired. You could leave one bundled up and use the other for decoration. Both strings will turn on so you would need to hide the bundle behind something to block the light.

No the set has two 300 light strings attached to the controller. There is no way to turn off one string

Maybe. You cannot disconnect them, however you could just not put them up and maybe leave them in a black bag at the bottom of your tree.
