Yes, it goes over the existing rearview mirror. The dash cam's mirror is darker than stock mirror. It's like looking through a tinted window. It does give the option to use the rear camera's stream as your Field of view, it does take a bit to get use to that option.

However it does take time to get used to it, I personally hate the split screen. It takes a few days to get use to it. It was also a very difficult install. It was supposed to only take an hour and a half but it took Best Buy about 3 1/2 hours to put it in my car.
