“About how large can this be opened up to? Whats the largest circumference this can open to? Trying to use this for other purposes than for a helmet. Also, is it a buckle that secures the strap or is it more of a hook and loop?”

This mount has a separate strap on each side that loops out from the central mount. The central mount is about 3" wide, and each strap/loop can extend about 5" when fully extended and flat, so if the max it could stretch is about 13". Whatever space the object you're attaching it to would be positioned inside the loops and would therefore shorten the reach of the straps though, so take that into consideration. Each strap/loop is secured with a clip latch so you can pull the straps tight and lock down the latch. Simply pop the latch open to loosen or remove the mount.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I don't think this works as you are imagining. There are two straps that cinch the base to the helmet, not one as you seem to suggest. Each works like a hook and loop, where you feed the strap in, loop it back out and then snap the cinch in place.
