• If you're looking to convert VHS tapes to DVD / digital files, then yes -- you'll need to own a VCR. The VCR plugs into the converter box, and then the converter box plugs in to the computer. The VCR plays the tape, and the converter box records and converts the video to a digital file at the same time.

• I had the same thought, especially since the copy says it would be good for someone who doesn't even own a vcr anymore.....(bad copywriting)....BUT won't this also work without a VCR if you hook it up directly to your camcorder and play the original recording back to your computer?

• If you want to record a video...then yes..you need a way to play the video.
