After purchasing this item, I can provide my own answer, which is that it depends on the TV and on the particular output. With my Sharp TV the TV volume control will change the sound bar volume if you're using the standard audio output (and your'e set up for variable audio out). If you're connected to the optical audio output, it won't. This probably varies from TV to TV.
