I do have a smart tv hooked to the system. There is a sound out on the tv to an audio in on the soundbar. It may actually work with a different source other than a tv.

Hello, you do not need a smart TV for this to work. However, it would need to be a TV that has an HDMI port so you can use this sound bar. You can also use an optical connection for sound too. But a Smart TV is not necessary.
