You can connect with a direct cable, but most high speed internet routers are wireless now

You need a (reasonably) high speed internet connection to get the Smart part of the TV. You will have to go through a router to which you can either hardwire to or use a wireless connection. Over the air or regular cable works with out the internet.

You will need to have Internet access for the Smart TV to work. All of the apps are Internet based

Not exactly. You can still connect your cable or antenna to it for it to work. If you want to use the internet based apps, you need the internet as that's the purpose of a smart TV.

To use the smart features you would need internet service. If not then you can just use it as a normal TV.
