As an example in reference to the numbers 5.1.2, they mean 5 channels (left front, center, right front, left rear, right rear) the 1 represents the subwoofer and the 2 represents the Dolby Atmos or height Speakers. To answer your second question, yes you can connect this to your Samsung TV and no you will not need a receiver.
