Hello. Your phone is still useable. You can get calls send and recieve text messages emails etc. Depending on your smartphone it can be the remote control also.

I didnt know that whenI purchased, but I just use my apple tv and stream through that instead. I purchased the tv for the price point.

When casting content you phone is acting like the remote for the content being cast. You can still use your phone as normal when casting to browse other applications or answer phone calls.
