“I see where some put the sub-woofer in the back of the room by the 2 smaller speakers -- is this the best placement for sub-woofer or should it be by the sound bar?”

The subwoofer is connected by wires to the back speakers. So both small speakers and the subwoofer need to be located in the back of the room, preferably behind the sitting location.
