Does the screen light up at night or when it rings? null

It does light up when it rings.

So the light on the phone can't be turned off.

I think it just lights up when it rings and also when you pick the phone of from the base. So when you are asleep if it's next to your bed you will not have a problem with that light. You may have a problem with the red light that is on when the answering machine part of the base is active that is the only light that is on 100% of the time.

CS6649 base and cordless handset have backlit screens which illuminate with the phone is active.
