“Is this HD covered under WD's Black Edition retail version 5-yr warranty, or is this classified as an OEM HD which usually has no WD warranty? I can quickly check at WD if you email me the S/N of the HD I'd be getting. Thx”

As far as I know these drives do have the factory 5 year warranty based upon the date of manufacture. WD retail sold drives generally have the 5 year warranty with them if they are the WD BLACK series. It is true that there are some WD Black that don't have the 5 year warranty, but those are because the computer resellers or repair shops buy those from a distributor and not a retail store. Whenever I install a drive like this I always do a check on the WD website under the warranty checker and I print out the return information after I put in the Serial # for the WD Black series hard drive. I have never seen a store sold WD Black drive that has not had the 5 year warranty.
