Internal type disk drives usually need to be formatted and activated to be used. There is no operating system on them. External drives usually are ready to use in plug and play. Check the format type, as some are not formatted to NTFS.

If it's the hard drive being replaced or if you want to move your OS over to the new hard drive, you'll need to reinstall it to that hard drive. However, if you plan to keep the old hard drive you could just plug the new one in and play.
