Yes, this will work with your iMac and MS Word. It will work with any Mac application. You can also hook it up to a Windows computer if you need to. There is enough space on this drive to store over a million manuscripts of 100,000 wc.

I have it formatted so that I can use on both Mac and PC from time to time, but for your use as you described I would recommend that you use a Mac only format for faster speeds with a Mac. The drive does not come formatted so you will need to use the drive utility on your Mac to format.
