“I have limited computer skills. I had an external hard drive backup that all I had to do was plug it in and downloaded my entire hard drive. Then when my computer crashed I just plugged it into the new one, it transfered everything. Will this do the same?”

Typically, no. If you're using a Mac, then Time Machine will make it super easy for you to do that, but would require setup. Or find a compatible Windows alternative. But both would need to be setup to automatically backup when you mount the device (connect the device). But all of this can be done, pretty easy, just search on YouTube, find a instructor you like, keep those backups..... well.... backed up.
