If you're asking whether it uses an AC plug/batteries, then no, just the USB cable. However, the USB cable needs to be connected to a device powerful enough to spin the fan. I tried connecting it to my phone with a dongle (it works on flashdrives), but my phone wasn't powerful enough to spin the fan so it couldn't connect. Other average devices (ie. laptops) will power it just fine.

Please note this device will not work through an adapter. I have a 2017 Macbook Pro, which comes only with USB-C ports, so I use a HyperDrive USB-C adapter hub that includes regular USB ports. I connected the external hard drive to the HyperDrive hub and the hub to the computer, and I could hear the hard drive trying to start up but not getting enough power to do so.

This one terabyte hard drive. Its a small, compact drive, its cable connection is "special plug-in" to this device, with the other end a USB plug-in. A single cord drive.
