• If you format it on your Mac it should be fine on your Mac. These usually come preformmatted for NTFS for Windows

• I erased the drive out of the box with the Disk Utility (on my MacBook Pro) and reformatted as OS X Extended (Journaled). I use the disk to back up my Mac Mini.
