I imagine that depending on the backup software you use the answer is YES. You need to make sure that it backups to the external drive and does so at the right interval. I believe Time-shift or really any software will do this and backup what ever files you want. The software will usually then update only the files that have been changed since the last update. Again, depending on the frequency of the backup you set it should be done easily as long as you keep the external drive connected to the machine ( yes I forget to do that and my husband reminded me how careless that can be). In any event if you have the external drive attached then the backup software should handle all the steps to use the drive to backup whatever data you have designated and at the interval you want.
