Connect with USB. Format the drive using Disk Utility. Set up Time machine to now use this new drive. Easy.

Once you connect the drive, you need to go into System Preferences, Time Machine and choose that drive as the one to be used for Time Machine. It will then configure the drive and setup the schedules and start the backup automatically. It will start with a full backup and then do incrementals on a schedule. Nothing you need to do -- as long as the drive is hooked up, Time Machine will take care of everything for you. NOTE: When Time Machine configures the drive, it will erase all the contents -- so if you have data on the hard drive you want to keep, save it off before making this drive used for Time Machine.
