Per this page, it is one of the few WD drives that is not encrypted, however you should call them. https://support.wdc.com/knowledgebase/answer.aspx?ID=15150 Most WD drives make it very difficult to read existing data via a new enclosure or directly in a PC... even if you do not use the password function. I generally no longer buy WD drives due to the exact problem you are having: A bad case renders the drive data unreadable.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.It did not need to be unencrypted to install. However, I think it is formatted for PC and you may need to reformat it if is used with a mac. It might even say that on the Box (probably in little print someplace)
