Drive will "spin down" on it's own cycle (even if the pc is still running at times). The cycle is driven by when it is being accessed for data read/write, not by what the PC is doing. Otherwise it will go into a full standby mode if not accessed for a significant period of time.

I have decided to disconnect it after updating files in order to avoid contamination if a virus infects the PC. I do the file update myself and not automatically.
