“MS support told me to do a complete reset on my PC can i use this device to both backup my files and load a recovery image? They say to format a flash drive, but wouldn't this work just as well?”

This would work fine. I used it myself in a similar situation with an image file of one of my systems.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes. It will work just like a thumb drive, flash drive, or USB stick, whatever you want to call it. If you don't have USB 3.0 or higher it will still work, just slower.
