Western Digital has been transitioning these drives to 'White' labeled drives. They seem to be functionally identical to reds, but were likely labelled differently so people could not re-sell the drives as reds. The only catch is that you may have a 3.3v pin problem that will prevent the drive from booting, but that can easily be solved with some tape. Poke around on www.reddit.com/r/datahoarder and you'll see what I mean.
They are both reds, but the label is changed. The white label has an updated power connector which follows the new SATA specifications. If you plan on using this inside a PC instead of a NAS, you'll likely need to disconnect the 5v rail (yellow cable) from the power connector, otherwise the drive will just restart itself all the time and the system won't detect it.
They were only using Red Drives to use up stock they actual have 2 - 3 other drives in those units as well. Its up to them because they are selling a USB external drive you have to pay the higher cost point as far as buying a WD RED drive to guarantee Cache size and warranty. What Internal drive is likely in any given Easystore Based on the information I have right now, the following chart is what you're likely to get from a particular Easyshare model, and in the case of the NESN some clarification on them as it seems to change depending on when it was boxed and where. Easyshare Model Number Ends In... Potential Drive Models -NESN WD80EFZX (older Made in China), WD80EFAX (older Made in Thailand), WD80EMAZ (Seemingly newer packaged Easyshares), WD80EMZZ (?? A few reports of this drive lately, looking for info on them) -NEBB WD80EMAZ
Is the other one WHITE? It is called a NAS white label drive.
You're not guaranteed a specific model hard drive. You're guaranteed an amount of storage capacity. They fill the shells with the cheapest drive they have at the time they're filling the shells. Years ago, some people were finding gold enterprise drives in the WD external cases.
Not all of them are red. Some are white label but I am hearing just as good as the reds. But even still, for the money they can't be beat.
The drives are what's known as "white label" drives, but they're basically just alternative model numbers for WD Reds. You have WD Reds with white labels and that's about it.
