When will it die or stop working? Or does it even null

That is an impossible question to answer. The life of a device such as a HDD will take into account many factors including how often the device will be handle, conditions in which the device will be stored, how often it will be running, and the list goes on. If treated properly and used correctly, you should be able to get years of life out of the HDD.
