• No. You can freely disconnect and reconnect these drives. I have many of these drives and I frequently disconnect one drive and then switch to another drive in my library of multimedia files and data backups.. Windows 7 handles this automatically and it only takes a short time for Windows to remap and rescan the drives.

• Plug it in when you're gonna use it. Other than that it can be put away till you need it.
