Don't know about the XP comparability, but there is no on/off switch. Although it has its own power source, once plugged into your computer, the unit turns on and off with the computer.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.There is no on/off switch. I'm not sure about using it straight out of the box with XP. You may have to reformat the drive from NTFS to FAT32.
