• Don't know about the XP comparability, but there is no on/off switch. Although it has its own power source, once plugged into your computer, the unit turns on and off with the computer.

• I can't speak for windows XP, as i've used it on both Windows 10, and Mac OS X 10.11.5. No, there is no on/off switch.

• There is no on/off switch. I'm not sure about using it straight out of the box with XP. You may have to reformat the drive from NTFS to FAT32.
