Hi Ross, there are few differences between the external desktop drives and external portable drives. The desktop drives are not for traveling comparative the portable drives can be carried anywhere easily. Drive like My Book comes with the external power adapter and portable drives uses the power from the USB port. So, if you want to use the drive anytime you can keep it on. This IS a portable drive. It can be taken with you in your briefcase. It can be left plugged into the laptop and ejected before shutdown, just as you suggest.
