“Alternative power source? I see that this drive is powered via 12v power supply. Can it possibly also power itself via USB 3 only, without requiring that the power supply be attached? That would allow max portability when used with laptop, but allow it with power source attached, to utilize USB 2 for data, such as with a WDTV Live unit”

I believe the answer is no. I'm not 100% sure but when I originally hooked it up to a power strip. My Xbox one wasn't recognizing it and that's when I noticed that I had accidently switched off the power strip. The internals run at a faster speed than a passport style external hardrive therefore it needs the power to tun it and that just can't be achieved with just the USB.
