Yes, you must use the AC adapter. It's a full-sized external drive.

This is a full size 3.5 inch drive so it requires the 12V power from the AC adapter that comes with it. 5Volt power from the onboard USB is not enough. Onboard USB power only works on the smaller 2.5 inch drives not the full size 3.5 inch ones.
