Roland, to direct-connect via Ethernet, you'd need a crossover cable, and you'd need to set up an IP network for the two devices. It'd be better to just hang it off an existing network.

While it's backward compatible to USB 2.0, if your laptop has USB 3.0 you'll get the maximum performance from this. I used it on a PS4 to backup and it did the job (460GB of data) in about 1 hour. Reinstalling the data to the PS4 took roughly 3 hours - possibly a limitation of the PS4 and not the device since theoretically is should read faster than write. However, if your laptop only has USB 2.0, you're right in that it will take a while to read/write. To use Ethernet, you'd need a Network Attached Storage device (NAS) instead.
