You should be able to attach it to a server without any issues and see it on your computer. The easiest way to use it for your needs sounds like you should share it from your server and then "map a network drive" so it will show up as whatever drive letter you associate to it (ie: z:\). I have done this with several systems over the years, it might not always be the fastest way, but it should work out for you. I did however find that if I was attaching it to my router that (depending on which one I used) it did not recognize it. So make sure you are connecting it to an actual server and not your router.
