Yes, it is supposed to be hooked up directly to a router as a network device.

I can access it using my MacBook for time machine backups, or my Alienware PC for video editing and stuff. I can also access it via my xbox 1 for viewing movies on the big screen. I can also access it via my phone or iPad. It's a great little device for everyone!
