“Does this require WD Software to work or perform automatic backups? Does it "Phone Home" to WD or only work by uploading data to a server rather than directly through my network? I've heard some horror stories on WDs website about the MyCloud products”

Hello, Please keep in mind that if you want to configure automatic backups then you can use WD Acronis True Image for Western Digital. You could upload the data through Mycloud.com remotely and it will be saved to the device not online.
