“Do you have to have this near your router in order for it to back up? My computer isn't close to my router, and need to understand if you need to connect direct. My assumption is that once it is set up it will sit near the router and act like a cloud.”

It is not Wi-Fi enabled. It needs a hard ethernet connection. In my setup, my router is in my study but the drive is behind my TV in the living room. I have a Wi-Fi extender in the living room which links with the Wi-Fi modem/router in the study . The ethernet port on the extender feeds an ethernet switch and my TV, Blu-ray player, Xbox cloud device and one other item are fed thru the remaining ports on the switch. Each device "thinks" it's on a wired ethernet connection.
