“Does this portable drive need to be formatted before it can used? I tried using Windows Explorer to copy and paste files from my laptop to the portable drive but it does not work.”

• I just plugged and played with mine. As always let it automatically install the driver when first plugging it in and always always hit the remove hardware icon or turn off the comp before unplugging hard drives

• This drive is ready to use on a PC. Cannot speak to MAC, but think you would have to format for a MAC...Works great...
