Hi Cosmicwiz, The WD My Passport external hard drive comes pre-formatted for Windows OS. The hard drive can be reformatted to be used on a Mac OS. If you want to use this hard drive on Windows and Mac OS then the drive needs to be reformatted in ExFAT filesystem. Please refer to the link mentioned below for more information: How to Format a WD hard drive to exFAT or FAT32 File System: https://support-en.wd.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/20821/kw/exfat Need Help? Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. This answer if for WD - My Passport 4TB Portable Hard Drive: For future buyers on Mac, I was able to get it working on Mac after a while. At first you will only be to read the Hard Drive, so to write on it all you have to do is format it to exFAT. It will tell you to install WD software to be able to read and write the NTF format of the drive, but at the end I wasn't able to read or write. So skip all of that and just go to your disk utility application and click on the drive then click on partition and format it to exFAT and your done. If you want a password on it then go ahead and install the WD software that it asks.
