Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes, this disk works well with time machine and can back up photos. Time machine will back up the whole computer including photos, but you could back them up separately, too. You can use the whole disk for one computer's time machine backup, but if you have more than one computer or want to back photos up separately, I would recommend creating partitions on the disk using Apple's Disk Utility (usually found in the Applications folder under Utilities). I am attaching a picture of my disk partitions. Two 1.5 TB partitions are used for computers and a 1.0 TB partition can be used for anything else. Hope that helps.
