You should be able to plug it in and start copying data to it immediately with any version of Windows, Vista or later. It comes already partitioned (with one partition) and formatted with NTFS.

No, I used it straight out of the box. Vista and 8.1 recognized it at its full capacity.

I didn't have to do any partitioning at all. Just plug it into a USB slot

It will be formatted as NTFS by default, which both Vista and Windows 7 can both recognize the entirety of the 2TB this drive offers with that format without partitioning or reformatting.
