Hi TheRealPapaDan, WD Red Plus is ideal for archiving and sharing, as well as RAID array rebuilding on systems using ZFS and other file systems. Built and tested for up to 8-bay NAS systems, these drives give you the flexibility, versatility, and confidence in storing and sharing your precious home and work files. Unlike desktop drives, these drives are specifically tested for compatibility with NAS systems for optimum performance. Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. This is exactly the role for these drives. They are optimized for 24/7/356 operations like backup drives.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Sure. Take a look at a multi-bay Synology NAS enclosure and configure as RAID.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You can put these drives in a enclosure but it is kind of a waste of money. Red drives are more expensive because they are designed to be ran 24x7, like in a server or NAS. They are not necessarily faster. If you want a external backup drive you would most likely unplug it when the backup is complete. A desktop drive like a black (faster) or a blue drive (average speed) would make more sense. If you plan on using the external drive to increase the capacity of your computer's storage, and it would be on all day every day, then a red drive is not a bad choice.
