Please try again later.Since you're going to use it by voice command or phone app you can put the switch in the box that has the neutral running through it (probably the one at the top of the stairs), cap the wires that go to the other switch (do not connect them to the new switch) and use it that way. You will have a black (hot), and the ground connected to the new switch coming from the power source and a black running out from the new switch to the light. You will tie into the white (neutral) that comes from the same line as the black power source. The white (neutral) wire in a single-pole setup will not be connected to the switch. Don't laugh, I've seen it done. They thought it was like a car battery, 1 of each color attached. The black, white, red and ground that meet in the box from the other switch will all be capped. Make sure you're not tying any of the wires from the other switch into the new setup. Never leave a wire uncapped even if there's "no" power to it.
