“Can I just use this switch to walk into the room and say turn the light on? If no, do I have to have my phone in my hand? I don’t want to have to hook it to anything I want to just be able to speak at the switch and have the switch come on”

Yes you can depending what voice recognition you have like Siri Alexa or others. You have to program them to their app. But not all are compatible. Check before buying.
