“I've read that Roku is a subscription-based application just like Netflix. Is it that I have to pay this subscription to them in order to access anything on the tv? I know that I can't disable the Roku feature but would I be able to search the web?”

Not sure about searching. I'm guessing you can. There has been so much for free through Roku and on this tv that we haven't had to look elsewhere. I discovered that there is access to lots of other services like Roku that all offer lots of free tv and movies! and I mean lots, more than I ever expected or even knew about
