This reply is probably too late to be useful to the original questioner, but I'll answer it anyway. Maybe someone will find it helpful. You could do this, if you add the top panel and frame after setting the center channel on the shelf. Which could be tricky, but certainly is doable. You have 9 inches between the top of the top shelf and the console top, on the inner chamber, but less than 8 from that surface to the front bezel overhang - so you could not slide it in after assembly. You have about a foot of depth, by the way.

You might just have enough room to fit an 8" high center channel; the opening alone is 6.85 inches and the top panel has room underneath of a little over one inch. Depending on the depth of the center channel, you might be able to put it in place even after installation is finished!
