“this dishwasher leaving detergent across left side of utensils and plates on lower rack. Is this a defect? New unit less than a month old. Tried more than half a dozen washes now and all leave detergent smear or crusting on utensils and plates. I am not overloading and tried both solid detergent and the small combination pods with drying aid. Same results. Is this dishwasher just like that or is this a defective unit? I already replaced once with different problem after 1 day. I'm not sure whether I should choose another dishwasher.”

Most likely your heating element isn't working. If it doesn't heat the detergent up to a certain temperature than it will leave (smear) residue and globs of detergent over your dishes.
