Dear Customer: The heater is a part of the defrost system that will melt the built-up frost so you don't have to take everything out of your freezer to manually defrost the unit. The system will monitor the compressor run-time and the on-time of the evaporator to defrost automatically when necessary. When the refrigerator is in defrost mode it is normal for parts near the heater to be temporarily warm to the touch. Thank you for your inquiry regarding your Whirlpool refrigerator!
