“We have horrible city water and our current fridge allows us to put ice cubes in the holder and still use the dispenser without the unit making the cubes. Does this unit have the ability to do that?”

Yes, you can. We currently do just that with a similar Maytag model (same company) that allows us to not use the inside ice maker. We are in the US Virgin Islands and we use cisterns filled with Rain and/or Well Water. We put two trays of ice in the freezer and use them to fill the ice storage built in the freezer door. We can finally use ice dispenser on the outside of the freezer door.
