I dont believe you can leave the top open but it only fills with water on a couple settings.. Laundry soap and softener is in back under lid there is a drawer, bleach is in front..

Hello Kevin, the top cannot be left open when filling with water. Add both liquid HE detergent & fabric softener (if desired) to the dispenser drawer. Make sure to choose the “Fabric Softener” Rinse Option when adding Fabric Softener. Thank you for your inquiry on our Whirlpool appliances.
