Hit what type you need (like Bake) then use number pad to set temp (at say 350) and then hit start and wait for it to heat up.

Just use the pin pad enter temperature and push bake or start.

Hit bake then use the number pad to key in the temperature then hit start. I will agree that the book leaves a lot to be desired. I have not worked through all the nuances of delayed baking - it says that it can be programmed, but I have not needed that option as of yet. Good luck and happy baking.
