Why do you say it cannot be built-in, when in the "Features" section it says it can be used free-standing or built-in, and on the company website it shows the unit built-in on a boat, and you can see the lip around the edge for it to fit flush with the cabinet fronts. Yes, it can be built in. Yes, if you want to install it built-in you do have to observe proper clearances around it....but that shouldn't be a problem if your cabinets are standard size, as this unit is not as deep as standard cabinets so if it is even with your cabinets at the front you will have the extra clearance room at the back. Of course, read the instructions and measure before purchasing or installing, but yes this unit is intended to have the option of being built in.

This item is designed for freestanding installation and needs 4-6" of clearance at the back and on the sides.
